My new room is too small for a coffee table and I have no place for my remotes or to charge my cell phone so I wanted to make a sofa table. I found a solution on Pinterest. A narrow sofa table to go behind the sofa.
I was in the thrift store when I spied this shelf and I thought this would be a cute knick knack shelf to go on the end of my sofa table.
I purchased a primed 1×6 and cut it the length of my loveseat. I cut out a raggedy hole for my wireless charger. The hole does not have to be perfect because once you put the cover on the hole all your cutting sins are forgiven…thank goodness. You’ll see later
I cut down the shelf with a notch so I can sit the shelf across the top
I painted the top purple
For the top I wanted to try a new technique called dot painting. Because I need some help I decided to use my stencil to get me started. I sprayed the back of my Plaid Home Decor Medallion Stencil with spray adhesive then filled in the spaces with dots using Tulip Metallics Dimensional Fabric Paint.
I wanted to add some elephants so I blew up some elephants to full 8.5″x11″ but they were too large to fit. I measure the height and divided 5″ by the height and got the percentage that I needed to reduce the print. I took it back to Office Max and reduced it as applicable. Note that because the prints have a copyright banner you can not ask for help with it. You are onyour own. So once I got the sizes I needed I placed them on the board and traced the outline
I filled in the details with my pencil (lines only). Then I went over the outline with my gold paint. dot dot dot dot dot. Then I filled in these little ultrafine tip applicator bottles I found in Joanns with Folkart Extreme Glitter acrylic paint and dot dot dot dot dot I filled in the medallion and elephants. whew…
Lesson learned that you don’t want the dots too little. You want them a nice size.
dot dot dot dot dotdot dot dot dot dot
dot dot dot dot dotdot dot dot dot dot
Then I kept going dot dot dot dot dot dot dot dot dot dot
dot dot dot dot dot dot dot dot dot dot
dot dot dot dot dot dot dot dot dot dot
dot dot dot dot dot dot dot dot dot dot
dot dot dot dot dot dot dot dot dot dot
I sealed the top with water based satin finish polyurethane so that I can wipe it down if need be.
Then I painted the sides in blue that I had been admiring. It looks like denim paint to me. I like it. I put my L squares on so I can mount everything together
I laid the top on and screwed in 1/2″ screws from the bottom so they won’t go through and ruin the top. I also dropped in the wireless charger.
This is the perfect place for my remotes, coasters and wireless charger. If I make another of these I will make it shorter than the couch. It is too tall. Lesson learned. They didn’t tell me that on Pinterest. I might cut it down later. For now I am done.
